iOS5 And the White iPhone 4S Jump Ahead Of Android
One week prior to the release of the White iPhone 4 Apple will launch the latest version of it famous operating system. The new iOS5 platform features many improvements which the developers hope will push the platform ahead of its biggest rival Android. Android themselves however are about to launch a massive update of their own system in the shape of the strangely named Ice Cream Sandwich. Does the new Apple update offer enough to put daylight between itself and its biggest rival?
The release of iOS5 is perhaps the most important ever for Apple as recently they have seen Android grab the market share of US users with a massive 36 per cent compared with their own share of 26 per cent. In terms of handset sales the iPhone ranked only fourth behind the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola. Thus the launch of both the new platform and White iPhone 4 is critical for the company. The Ice Cream Sandwich update of Android is the first to merge mobile handsets and tablet devices and give users one platform which can be used across all of their devices. Previous to this Tablet users were given the Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform whilst phone users had version 2.3. The new operating system not only enables simple synchronisation between multiple devices but means all Android users can now download applications designed to work on all units which should subsequently help the platform gain a bigger market share in terms of downloads. Developers will also be pleased with this latest version as they can now design a single program rather than design different versions for different devices. This is all pretty impressive stuff from Android, however Apple has a few tricks up its sleeve with iOS5. Apple have used universal applications for their devices for some time now meaning they can focus their efforts on improving what is the most user friendly platform to date.
The iOS5 operating system will be shipped on the new White iPhone 4S and the black version and will also be available to owners of the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS. Over 200 improvements have been implemented, some of them minor but many of them very significant. One of the stand out features is the new iMessage facility which has been influenced by the popularity of the Blackberry Messenger system. This enables users of Apple products to message one another free of charge but the real advantage is that you can start a conversation on you iPhone and then pick up your iPad and continue where you left off. Apple have also opted to make more use of location based services and this is most noticeable on the improved Reminders application. You can now set a location for a reminder so your phone can remind you to pick up some wine when you pull into the supermarket or to phone your mum the minute you arrive home. Apple have even taken some ideas that have previously been used by Android and the new notifications centre is a great example of this. All notifications can now be viewed on one page which can be accessed by a downward swipe on the phones screen.
The Android Ice Cream Sandwich is impressive and helps to unify a number of different products but the new iOS5 offers far better features and improvements. This new system should help to ensure that demand for the White iPhone 4S is as high as we have previously experienced on previous iPhone releases.
The White iPhone 4S and the White Samsung Galaxy S2 are available now.
