In this era of internet, MP3 has become a de facto standard for digital audio encoding,in which,a particular form of lossy data compression is used. It is one of the most widely used digital encoding format for storing audio files. This audio specific format was designed and developed by Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG in short form). Though initially it was defined as a part of MPEG-1 standard but later on it was incorporated in MPEG-2 standard also. Engineering teams of CCETT,Thomson-Brandt,Fraunhofer IIS,AT&T Bell Labs,University Of Hanover and other organizations constituted the first MPRG audio group. MP3 format got ISO approval in 1991 and was released in 1993.

Evolution Of MP3

MP3 standard employs digital audio data compression technology,which was based on auditory masking. According to auditory masking, a tone of particular frequency could be made silent by imposing another pitch of lower frequency on it. Based on auditory masking, the total set of auditory tones was discovered in late 1950s. The first auditory masking codec was developed in 1979 by a group of scientists at Bell Labs. Then came the codecs ,known as Perceptual Transformation Coding and Optimum Coding In Frequency domain. These two codecs were later incorporated into a single codec,known as Adaptive Spectral Perceptual Entropy Coding (ASPEC in short form). ASPEC was one of the two codecs used by MPEG group to develop MP3. The other one was Masking Pattern Adapted Universal Sub-band Integrated Coding And Multiplexing (Musicam in short form). MP3 Standard

Out of the two codecs,submitted to MPEG group for development of MP3,Musicam was selected because of it’s low cost,error handling capacity,simplicity and low power consumption. Sub-band coding was used to develop Musicam format,based on which the MP3 audio compression formats,such as sample numbers per frame,header,frame structure,sampling rate, were designed. MPEG-1 Audio Layer 1,2 and 3 algorithms were approved in 1991 and finalized in the next year. These standards are documented in ISO 11172-3 in 1993. The next version MPEG-2 was developed in 1994 and documented in ISO 13818-3.

Audio Encoding Process

Though there is no particular specification for audio encoding process in the MPEG-1 standard,but some examples of psycho-acoustic patterns are provided. Many designers were involved in the design of encoders. As a result,numerous MP3 encoders of different quality are available. The encoder which is good in encoding at higher bit rates may not be good in encoding at lower bit rates. Time domain samples are read and transformed into frequency domain samples during the encoding process. Usually the number of samples is 576 but during the transition period only 192 samples are taken to reduce the effect of noise signals.

Audio Decoding Process

Audio decoding process is very well defined in the MP3 standard. Most of the decoders comply with elementary stream as specified by the MPEG communication protocol. Format of the elementary stream is based on the type of the data transmitted through the stream. Usually it consists of a header and data frame.
